Acosta says that to support an OB hospitalist program with 4-4.5 full-time hospitalists, hospitals need to deliver 2,000 to 2,500 babies per year to offset the cost of the program. Swain says that 1,500 to 2,000 deliveries are sufficient to offset costs, but the exact number will depend on each hospital’s circumstances.
Acosta notes that in the Washington state area, the average salary for an OB ranges from $175,000 to $250,000, and Sacred Heart pays its OB hospitalists somewhere in the middle. Multiply that salary by four and tack on some malpractice insurance, and most hospitals are looking at $1 million annually.
