FHM designation gives hospitalists long-awaited recognition: What it takes to be a Fellow of Hospital Medicine

To qualify for the FHM designation, hospitalists must meet a long list of criteria, including practicing hospital medicine for a minimum of five years and being a member of SHM for a minimum of three years. To see the full list of eligibility criteria, visit http://tinyurl.com/SHMCriteria.
Why a minimum of five years in hospital medicine? SHM’s time requirement before becoming eligible for the FHM designation ensures that it recognizes those individuals who have dedicated their careers to hospital medicine, “as opposed to a stop off to another career objective,” says Shaun Frost, MD, FACP, FHM, regional medical director at Brentwood, TN-based Cogent Healthcare, board of directors for SHM, and chair of the SHM membership committee that pioneered the FHM process.
