Deliberate role modeling and coaching by leaders is a key to producing change. “If you take the time to show that you value safe practices, then others will value them also,” says Voutt-Goos. Demonstrating commitment to safety includes simple actions:
• Take the time to wash your hands before and after every encounter so that others do the same
• Taking a lead role in conducting a time-out before procedures to prevent wrong-site surgeries
• Encourage patients and front-line caregivers, including nurses, advanced practice professionals, residents, and technicians to repeat instructions from a physician to confirm they understand clearly
