Tips for a successful medical staff leadership retreat: Involve leaders in training the next generation

The first step in planning a medical staff leadership retreat is determining whether you need one at all. Medical staff leaders should start by prioritizing the goals of the medical staff and the hospital. If those goals require widespread education and possibly a shift in culture for either group, a retreat is the way to go. If certain goals or problems can be traced to a few individuals, then one-on-one education or evening seminars will probably do the trick, says Richard A. Sheff, MD, CMSL, chairman and executive director of The Greeley Company.
