The average hospitalist compensation is $201,000 a year, according to a new Merritt Hawkins & Associates report, 2009 Review of Physician and CRNA Recruiting Incentives.
According to the report, hospitalists have one of the highest income gains of all specialties, after neurology. Hospitalists’ salaries rose 11% in 2008/2009, up from $181,000 in 2007/2008. In 2006/2007, the average compensation was $180,000 and $175,000 during the previous year.
Not only are hospitalists earning more income, they are also highly sought after. In physician searches by practices, hospitalists are the third most requested specialists after family medicine and general internal medicine physicians.
“In addition, by relieving office-based physicians of inpatient work, hospitalists can increase medical staff retention and satisfaction rates,” states the study. “However, because so many internal medicine practitioners are choosing to practice as hospitalists, the supply of general internists has become constrained, making internal medicine one of the most difficult search assignments to fill today.”
