The case manager-hospitalist relationship can be a “win-win,” says Stefani Daniels, managing partner at the Phoenix: Medical Management, Inc. Daniels submitted her entry for The Greeley Medical Staff Institute Symposium contest about the dynamics of this working relationship.
At Phoenix, the medical management company assigns a dedicated case manager to a hospitalist team.
“For the hospitalist, it means that he or she has someone who will help manage the ‘business’ of managing care—someone who will deal with the insurers if necessary, the utilization review nurses, the documentation improvement specialists, and others who want a piece of the hospitalist’s time to ensure compliance with the rapidly escalating regulatory requirements,” Daniels says.
Case managers also benefit.
“For the case manager, it means that he or she has access to the primary decision-maker—the physician whose decisions will directly and indirectly affect costs and quality of outcomes. The case manager can offer practice alternatives for the physician’s consideration, alternatives that reduce risk and cost, and promote a safe and expedient progression of care,” she says.
