Contest entry: Redesign your physician retention plan
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, September 21, 2009
“A lot of time, money, and effort go into recruiting physicians,” says Medical Staff Coordinator Carrie Garity, CPMSM, at Fort HealthCare in Fort Atkinson, WI. “The hospital flies them in, wines and dines them, shows them the hospital, clinics, and community. Once the physician decides to join a medical staff, however, the royalty treatment seems to end.”
Garity submitted a best practice for The Greeley Medical Staff Institute Symposium contest about rethinking your physician retention plan. She advocates for the medical staff professionals and administrative staff members taking an active role in helping new physicians adjust to their new setting. She suggests the following:
- Invite new physicians, existing physicians, and hospital employees to a new-physician reception
- Include more department managers in a longer, thorough new-physician orientation
- Follow up with new physicians with an informal e-mail three or four weeks after their start dates
- Get feedback from the new physician at the six-month point with a questionnaire
Keep those contest entries coming, and you could win the free registration to The Greeley Medical Staff Institute Symposium (Nov. 8-9, Naples, FL)!
We’ll share the entries on the blog and select the best one at the end of the month.
