Information regarding physician reentry related to program availability, program structure, and regulatory requirements is scattered at best. Program standardization and regulatory requirements are also lacking. To consolidate the available information and begin to address issues related to standardization, the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates approved a report on physician reentry during its 2008 Annual Meeting. The report includes a set of guiding principles that were developed in part to serve as a foundation from which physician reentry programs can be planned, evaluated and monitored. Currently, the AMA is developing a follow-up report that is intended to address several topics, including the requirements of medical licensing boards for reentering physicians and hospital credentialing issues related to reentry.
