Physician orientation: An essential retention tool

When Dean White, DDS, MS, retired in 2003 from Harris Methodist HEB in Bedford, TX, he took on a part-time job as the medical staff advisor. White had held numerous medical staff leadership positions during his 30-year career at Harris Methodist (part of Texas Health Resources) and assumed he knew the essentials of hospital operations, but he attended the hospital’s employee orientation process out of obligation.
“It was quite an experience,” he says. “I learned stuff about our hospital, even after 30 years.” The experience was so helpful that he approached the director of medical staff services and said, “This is something we ought to be doing [for physicians].”
