Emergency preparedness: Disaster veterans share experiences and lessons learned

It’s July, which means that most Americans are thinking about lemonade, hot dogs, and baseball. Hospital and medical staff leaders, however, are thinking about tornados, hurricanes, and the recent H1N1 outbreak. It’s a good time for hospitals to stress test their disaster plans to ensure that they can withstand the unexpected.
Even if your hospital is in a safe haven out of the path of hurricanes and tornados, you should still dust off your emergency plan. The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) introduced the Emergency Management chapter in the 2009 edition of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals. The standards in this chapter were pulled from other chapters (including Medical Staff) and tweaked, so reviewing it with a fine-toothed comb will keep your facility in compliance.
