Featured blog post: The rise of the laborist and surgicalist
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 9, 2009
Physicians in specialty fields are realizing the benefits of the hospitalist model, and many are adapting it to their own specialties. Because medical specialists are often called on in emergency situations, having an unfamiliar hospitalist take the place of a patient’s usual attending specialist is up for discussion.
One controversial application of this concept is the laborist, who specializes in infant delivery. Although many women question the idea of an unfamiliar doctor delivering their baby, laborists actually present a solution to the growing pains of the OB/GYN field. As noted in an article titled, “The Birth of a Notion,” from The Boston Globe, high malpractice insurance costs and grueling on-call schedules have forced many OB/GYN doctors to give up hospital delivery.
The work of the delivery room laborist, however, is not only a solution for the diminishing number of OB/GYNs, but also for patient care administered by these hospitalists.
