Tip: Involve case managers in leadership decisions

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 2, 2009

One way to improve the hospitalist-case manager relationship is to involve leaders from both departments in decision-making. Leaders from the case management department and various medical departments should be behind any system changes.

For example, Middle Tennessee Medical Center (MTMC) in Murfreesboro began working with consultants to create a more effective case management model that ultimately reduced length of stay and hospital charges. To encourage physicians to view case managers as their partners, MTMC held educational sessions for the medical staff.

“The first thing I had to do was give the okay to try something different,” said Andrew Brown, MTMC chief medical officer.
