Featured blog post: Demonstrating value: Proof in dollars

In this era of healthcare reform and ever-increasing financial pressure, I believe our ability to demonstrate value to our hospital is critical. There were many, many great sessions at the recent Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Annual Meeting in Chicago, but none more important, in my opinion, than the session about demonstrating value to hospital administrators.
When attempting to demonstrate value, it is important to present a fair and balanced view of the numbers. For example, as Leslie Flores, MHA, pointed out in an SHM session, when presenting savings from length-of-stay reduction, remember to acknowledge revenue lost on those patients for whom the hospital is paid on a per-diem basis. I believe you will improve your credibility and trust with administration if you present accurate and reasonable numbers in a fair and balanced manner.
Sometimes, this is difficult due to insufficient hospital data systems. In these cases, involve the hospital CFO in arriving at the numbers. Working together through this sometimes difficult process should produce a result that all parties can accept.
