Sen. Baucus talks about healthcare reform
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 22, 2009
The Hospitalist, a Society of Hospital Medicine publication, interviewed Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) for the May issue Q&A, titled, “Medicine’s Change Agent: Influential senator says HM can help lower costs, improve quality of care.”
The six-term Senator and leader of the Senate Finance Committee, who wrote the white paper, “Call to Action: Health Care Reform 2009,” has been one of the Senate members spearheading healthcare reform.
With the ambitious goal of controlled healthcare spending, Baucus proposes a return to primary care and preventative care through community health centers and rural clinics.
“With more people in the healthcare system, we will need more physicians and resources,” Baucus said in the article. “My plan increases the number of primary-care doctors by strengthening the role of primary care…My plan will increase the supply of primary-care practitioners by using federal reimbursement systems and other means to improve the value placed on their work,” he said.
Among other initiatives, Baucus proposes improved technology to collect and analyze quality data and improved transitions for patients from the hospital to home.
How do hospitalists fit in to the equation?
“I’m asking everyone in the healthcare community to help me create a 'can-do' environment for healthcare reform,” Baucus said.
