All in the family: Effectively manage conflicts of interest that hit home

We see it on TV all the time—two physicians fall in love, get married, and continue to work side by side. Or a father and son team struggle to provide care to an economically depressed community. Viewers watch their
trials and tribulations, which sometimes end happily
ever after—but sometimes not.
“It is not uncommon to have multiple family members who are physicians, and for family reasons, they want to reside in the same community,” says Bruce Armon, an attorney at Saul Ewing, LLP, in Philadelphia.
But how do these types of relationships work in real life, especially with conflict of interest on the top of medical staff leaders’ minds? Whether a physician on your medical staff is married or otherwise related to another physician, an advanced practice professional, a nurse, or another hospital employee, there are a few things to keep in mind.
