When recruiting a physician to a particular specialty, a variety of physician compensation data sources are available to help you determine a reasonable compensation package and comply with fair market value requirements. To start your research, begin with these resources:

  • Compensation records of the physicians already employed or contracted at your organization for comparison
  • State hospital associations
  • Medical Group Management Association surveys (www.mgma.com)
  • Sullivan Cotter’s Physician Compensation and Productivity Survey (www.sullivancotter.com/surveys)
  • Various consulting firms

This week’s question and answer are adapted from, “Fair market value: Determine reasonable compensation packages to avoid legal trouble,” which appeared in the May issue of Medical Staff Briefing.
