MGMA releases daily on-call compensation by specialty

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 28, 2009

The Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) recently released its 2009 report, “Medical Directorship and On-Call Compensation Survey.” The more than 100-page report is based on 2008 data reported by 2,500 providers from more than 300 medical organizations.

For daily rates by physician specialty, neurosurgeons reported the highest compensation at $2,000 per day, whereas general surgeons reported $500 per day. Family practice physicians reported the lowest daily on-call compensation rate at $300.

In this report, MGMA grouped hospitalists under the “primary care” classification, including inpatient family practice, internal medicine, internal medicine pediatrics, and pediatrics. Primary care physicians reported the lowest daily on-call compensation rate at $300 per day for nonhospital-owned practices, compared to surgical subspecialists who received the highest rates in nonhospital-owned practices at $1,450 or $1,375 in hospital-owned practices.

Practice administrators and hospital executives should use this data as a comparison with its own data of medians, according to the report, to help determine on-call compensation.
