You've volunteered or been elected to take on a medical staff leadership role. So now what? In addition to participating in appropriate training, new medical staff leaders can take proactive steps to ensure they have all the tools they need for a successful tenure. MSB spoke with veteran medical staff leaders to learn what their new counterparts need to do during their first six weeks in office. "Some people going into these roles have no idea what they are because they have not been well defined," says Napoleon Knight, MD, vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, IL. Knight suggests working with hospital administration to make sure the requirements for the position are outlined in the bylaws, a medical director agreement, or a job description prior to accepting the position. This will give you a solid understanding of the time commitment you are making, skills you may need to develop, or resources you may need to tap to have a successful tenure.
