Physician assistant statistics at a glance
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 7, 2009
Last month, Hospitalist Leadership Connection reported that more advanced practitioners were on the rise, according to the “2008 Physician Retention Survey” by Cejka Search and the American Medical Group Association, released on March 2. The majority of the survey respondents (94%) said that their organization utilized advanced practitioners, including physician assistants (PAs), nurse practitioners, and certified registered nurses.
The American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) provided HCPro, Inc. with an advance copy of its “Facts at a Glance” regarding PAs.
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the total number or PA positions will rise 10% during the next 10 years, according to the AAPA statement. There are currently 79,706 people who are eligible to practice as PAs, and 78,893 people practicing clinically as PAs, according to the statement. There are approximately 12,000 enrolled students in PA programs, and about 4,000 students graduated in 2007.
