Add neurohospitalists to the list of specialty hospitalists

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 31, 2009

Neurology hospitalists, called neurohospitalists, are on the rise, according to a new study, “Is it time for neurohospitalists?” published in the March issue of Neurology.

Study authors from the University of Kansas defined “neurohospitalists” as specialists who devoted at least one-fourth of their time to managing inpatients with neurological diseases.

Between 2003 and 2007, researchers found that job advertisements for neurohospitalists have increased. However, limited information exists to confirm the data, such as standard terminology or even a central governing organization that unifies neurohospitalists, according to the study.

“Healthcare pressures spawned the growth of medicine and pediatric hospitalists, who provide efficient, cost-effective care by reducing the length of hospitalization. Because neurologists experience the same pressures, we expect neurohospitalists to increase in number, especially within areas that have sufficient inpatient volume and resources,” states the study abstract.
