Pediatric hospitalist trends

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, March 31, 2009

A new study provides what authors call the “most comprehensive information” on pediatric hospitalists trends, according to “Pediatric hospitalists: Training, current practice, and career goals,” published in the March issue of Journal of Hospital Medicine. Study authors from the University of Michigan and the American Board of Pediatrics polled nearly 500 pediatric hospitalists and found:

  • Most (94%) reported they are regularly assigned to the pediatric inpatient unit
  • About half (51%) reported they are regularly assigned to the inpatient consultation service
  • More than half (58%) do not provide service in the newborn nursery
  • A majority (84%) participate in quality improvement initiatives
  • A majority (81%) participate in practice guideline development

“This study provides the most comprehensive information available regarding the clinical and nonclinical roles, training, work expectations, and career plans of pediatric hospitalists. However, the field is currently a moving target; there is significant flux in the hospitalist workforce and variation in the roles of these professionals in their clinical and nonclinical work environment,” states the study abstract.
