Q&A: Adam Singer, MD, of IPC advocates for the virtual office

HCPro spoke with Adam Singer, MD, CEO of IPC The Hospitalist Company and Modern Healthcare’s Physician Entrepreneur of the Year in 2008.
Q: How do you suggest hospitalist programs become transparent?
A: One of the things we provide is a virtual office for every doctor in the company. That is the entry point into our technology. If you are at IPC, you must come to your virtual office every day to do your billing and do your work; that virtual office is just like your office. It has file cabinets and book shelves, clinical communications, regional news, company news, CME credits. It also has dashboards that pop up and populate every time you sign in from the real database so you know how many encounters you have done already [this month]. You know how many your partners have done already. You know how well your clinical notes have been throughout the month. It is displayed to you every day you sign on.
The reason this is important is because it is total transparency. I know what my partners are doing; I know what I am doing. I know that if I only have 100 encounters for this month, I am going to lose money for the practice. I can manage my performance because I know where I stand. We believe in that not just in the paper we provide, but it is embedded in the technology, and it is the way we do business.
