The case for systems support in EMRs

Hospitals may provide systems support to hospitalist programs, including capturing the hospitalist practice and hospital data (clinical and financial) and sharing it with providers. Analysis of this data significantly affects performance by allowing the program to review objective information. The program can subsequently create strategies, protocols, and tools to improve performance. The hospital may utilize the quality assurance director available (if there is one) to assist in performance analysis and improvement.
The purchase and implementation of an electronic medical record (EMR) is invaluable to hospitalist providers and users (e.g. referring providers). An EMR can facilitate daily communication between the hospitalist and the primary care physician, assuming that the outpatient practices have an EMR. It can also decrease the voltage drop (loss of information across the hospital threshold) that occurs when a patient is admitted and discharged from the hospital. Finally, it is an excellent way to track outstanding laboratory and diagnostic results when a patient is discharged.
