Some measurements of physician performance cannot be found in a medical record: some measurements require the medical staff to obtain others’ perception of a physician’s performance in addition to clinical data. This is called perception data. Because the use of perception data is new territory for most physicians, it is critical for physicians to buy into the collection and use of this data. Use the following steps to implement the use of perception data in your medical staff or physician group.
Step 1: Engage
Engage physician leaders in a discussion about your physician competency framework along with the intended purpose and use of perception data.
Step 2: Involve
Involve physicians in the design of perception data tools and methods.
Step 3: Pilot test
Pilot test any forms and survey tools with an appropriate group to determine whether the questions are understandable and the methods are reasonable to collect the data.
Step 4: Educate
Educate the medical staff prior to rollout so that the staff members know what data you will measure, as well as how your organization will use the data.
This week’s question and answer are excerpted from Measuring Physician Competency: How to Collect, Assess, and Provide Performance Data by Robert Marder, MD, CMSL; Mark Smith, MD, CMSL; Marla Smith, MHSA; and Vicki Searcy, CPMSM.
