Hospitalists workshops improve geriatric care education
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, December 2, 2008
Older hospital patients may be at risk for two major hazards: delirium and falls. Education in the medical field, however, does not emphasize the importance of identifying and preventing them.
In a recent study, researchers found that third-year medical students better identified delirium in elderly patients and patients at risk for falls after hospitalists ran workshops using assessment tools, according to the article, “Hazards of hospitalization: Hospitalists and geriatricians educating medical students about delirium and falls in geriatric inpatients,” published in Gerontology & Geriatrics Education from the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education.
Hospitalists and geriatricians working together can help supplement medical education to improve student assessment of geriatric inpatient care, according to the article.
