Maximizing your top-line revenue
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 25, 2008
Have you had to fund a child’s college education? Do you remember the questions that you asked before you wrote the checks? No one likes to overpay because the right questions weren’t asked. The hospital administrator will have similar questions before any contracts are drawn up. One question regarding your hospitalist program structure to ask is, “Are you maximizing your top-line revenue?”
You probably would not like to subsidize inadequate charting, coding, billing, and collection efforts. As such, the practice must prove:
- Proper pricing
- Tracking systems to identify patients
- Capture charges
- Accurate charting and coding
- Billing
- Collecting
- Audits and training programs to maximize collections
Comparison data are available from the Society of Hospital Medicine, as well as the Medical Group Management Association. Such data will provide charges and collections per hospitalist that allow you to compare your performance.
The above excerpt is adapted from The Hospitalist Program Management Guide 2nd edition by Kenneth G. Simone, DO, and Jeffrey R. Dichter, MD, FACP, published by HCPro, Inc.
