No program is perfect. Sometimes, what seemed like a good idea at one point just doesn't work out the way you thought it would. Additionally, times, circumstances, and needs often change, making last year's design obsolete for today's demands. As a result, an annual review is critical to a viable proctoring program. Don't stop at sending the annual review to the commitee(s) for rubber-stamp approval--set aside at least 15 minutes on the agenda so you can have a reasonable discussion and determine action steps to improve on the good work that has already been done.
This week's question and answer are adapted from Proctoring and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation: Practical Approaches to Verifying Physician Competence by Robert J. Marder, MD; Mark A. Smith, MD, MBA, FACS; and Todd Sagin, MD, JD.
