Consultant recommendations implemented with CPOEs

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, November 4, 2008

Using computerized provider order entry (CPOE) may increase the likelihood that consultants’ recommendations will be implemented during patient care, according to a new study, “Using Computerized Provider Order Entry and Clinical Decision Support to Improve Referring Physicians’ Implementation of Consultants’ Medical Recommendations,” published in the Oct. 24 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Currently, only half of consultants’ medical recommendations are translated into actual care, according to the researchers at Indiana University. During the study, hospitalists and geriatric consultants used the electronic communication tool. When facilities used the electronic method, recommendations were implemented 30% more often than without CPOEs. In addition, all of the survey respondents reported that electronic recommendations saved time and improved quality.
