U of Chicago develops geriatric hospitalist model

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, October 14, 2008

The University of Chicago Curriculum for the Hospitalized Aging Medical Patient (CHAMP) announced a model for teaching inpatient geriatric medicine to residents and students, according to a new study, “The Curriculum for the Hospitalized Aging Medical Patient program: A collaborative faculty development program for hospitalists, general internists, and geriatricians,” published in the October issue of Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Aimed at increasing the quality and occurrence of teaching inpatient geriatric medicine, the CHAMP faculty development program (FDP) consisted of twelve 4-hour training sessions for participating hospitalists and general internist faculty members. Each session included two hours of geriatric content and two hours of clinical content, including general teaching skills and teaching the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education core competencies.

Researchers of the study found that participating faculty favorably evaluated the program, citing improvements in knowledge, teaching, practicing, and attitude towards geriatrics.

This educational model could be applied to all teaching faculty caring for the older hospitalized patient, according to the study.
