HBIPS core measure set available today

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, September 30, 2008

Free-standing psychiatric hospitals and accredited hospitals with acute inpatient psychiatric units can now use a new measure set for Hospital-Based Inpatient Psychiatric Services (HBIPS) to meet Joint Commission ORYX performance measurement requirements, effective on discharges on or after today, Oct. 1. The hospitals can submit data on the following seven measures:

  • Admission screening for violence risk, substance use, psychological trauma history, and patient strengths completed
  • Hours of physical restraint use
  • Hours of seclusion use
  • Patients discharged on multiple antipsychotic medications
  • Patients discharged on multiple antipsychotic medications with appropriate justification
  • Post discharge continuing care plan created
  • Post discharge continuing care plan transmitted to next level of care provider upon discharge

The set of core performance measures were complied by the Joint Commission (formerly known as JACHO), the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems (NAPHS), the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD), and the NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc. The Joint Commission will report hospital quality performance when the National Quality Forum reaches approval on the measures.
