When the The Joint Commission adopted the six core competencies—which were originally developed by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education—it failed to specify which expectations would provide the basis to measure competency. “In other words, it laid the foundation but left people in the field to build the rest of the house,” says Robert Marder, MD, CMSL, vice president of The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, Inc., in Marblehead, MA. When developing a system for measuring physician performance, the question is, will your house be made of straw, wood, or bricks?
