Editor’s note: In the August MSB, we saw how the University of Pennsylvania Health System assesses professionalism. This month, we explore the systems-based practice competency.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)/Joint Commission’s (formerly JCAHO) six core competencies are:

1. Patient care

2. Medical knowledge

3. Practice-based learning and improvement

4. Interpersonal and communication skills

5. Professionalism

6. Systems-based practice

According to the ACGME, the systems-based practice competency requires physicians to “demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of healthcare, as well as the ability to call on the effectiveness of other resources in the system to provide optimal healthcare.”
