Cape Cod Hospital lays off employees

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, August 5, 2008

Despite nationwide efforts to recruit hospitalists, Cape Cod Healthcare Inc. may be laying them off, according to an Aug. 1 Cape Cod Times article. Due to declining patient admission rates and troubled finances, the Cape Cod and Falmouth Hospitals, under the umbrella of Cape Cod Healthcare, will let go 28 employees in clerical and housekeeping sectors. CEO Richard Salluzzo said the hospitalist staffing model would be adjusted but did not announce specific details at a press conference last week. Some worry that cuts in hospitalist numbers will hurt inpatient care and add burdens for primary care physicians. Salluzzo said in an Opinion piece, “We have also modified our hospitalist staffing, but in a way that we feel will not impact patient care. In fact, we hope to streamline the process in a manner that will improve patient safety,” he said. “Our proposed model is consistent with guidelines from the Society of Hospital Medicine and, after a period of good-faith negotiations, the medical staff leadership, the hospitalists, and administration have agreed in a consensual manner to try this new approach.”
