Hospital medicine is the fastest growing specialty

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, July 29, 2008

Since its formal introduction in 1996 when Robert Wachter and Lee Goldman first coined the term “hospitalist,” hospital medicine has become the fastest growing specialty in medical history with more than 20,000 hospitalists currently working, according to the Google Knol posted by Wachter last week.  In a comprehensive article post, Wachter details the history of hospital medicine and makes predications about the future of the movement:

  • Hospitalists may soon be an official medical specialty if the American Board of Internal Medicine approves hospitalist certification as an option in the Maintenance of Certification process
  • There will continue to be a lack of proper reimbursement for diagnosing patients
  • Hospital medicine will expand into hospitalist specialties including pediatrics, surgery, neurology, and obstetrics

Similar to an online dictionary, Google Knol is a publisher that allows users to self publish their papers on the Web.  Knols “may signal the end of medical publishing as we know it,” said Wachter in his response post on The Hospitalist- (Society of Hospital Medicine) sponsored blog, Wachter’s World
