Hospitalist Leadership Connection, July 22, 2008
Following last month’s release of the 2009 National Patient Safety Goals, the Joint Commission (formerly known as JACHO) posted some frequently asked questions in response to inquiries regarding the 2008 standards. The PDF files include information on the following goals:
- Patient identification
- Communication
- Medication safety
- Healthcare-associated infection
- Reconciliation of medications
- Reduction of falls
- Reduction of influenza and pneumococcal disease
- Reduction of surgical fires
- Patient involvement
- Pressure ulcer prevention
- Assessment of high-risk patient populations
Next year, there will be three new requirements for hospital and critical access hospitals to reduce healthcare-related infections due to drug resistance, blood, and surgery, to be implemented by January 1, 2010. The goals apply to more than 15,000 Joint Commission-accredited and certified healthcare organizations.
