The structure of the medical staff office (MSO) depends on the defined responsibilities and functions of the department and the number of full time employees. Define the tasks related to each function and the time required to complete each task. Based on the defined tasks and time, develop a detailed master calendar of each function. The calendar should include tasks that your office must carry out annually and monthly.

Activities to include on your yearly list include:

  • Dues statements
  • Officer elections
  • Special events
  • Annual staff meetings
  • Peak periods of credentialing
  • Influxes of new applications
  • Reappointment cycles

Activities to include on your monthly list include:

  • Monthly meetings
  • Continued medical education programs
  • Ongoing monitoring of credentials, such as expiring professional liability coverage, licenses, etc.

This week’s tip was adapted from The Complete Medical Staff Office Manual by Beverly E. Pybus, CMSC.
