Majority of patients lack comprehension of ED diagnosis or post-care

Most ED patients do no understand at least one part of the emergency department (ED) diagnosis or post-care instruction, according to the Annals of Emergency Medicine in a research study, “Patient Comprehension of Emergency Department Care and Instructions: Are Patients Aware of When They Do Not Understand?” The study indicated that out of 140 patients, 78% did not fully understand at least one part of their diagnosis, ED care, post-ED care, or return instructions. Only one-fifth of patients actually articulated that they did not understand the ED diagnosis or care, indicating they were not aware of the lack of comprehension. Read the full abstract here.
