The role of the hospitalist at academic institutions

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, July 8, 2008

As hospitalists continue to provide patient care for community and academic hospitals, many wonder how integrated hospitalists should be with other divisions in the hospital. That depends on the size of the facility, as well as local economic and social factors, according to the article “Where Should Hospitalists Sit Within the Academic Medical Center?” published last week by University of Michigan Medical School Department of Internal Medicine. Its authors predict that community hospitals will soon have separate hospitalist divisions, while larger teaching hospitals will be less likely to break off into separate units.
