The role of an MSP can be very stressful, time-consuming, and challenging. It is important for managers and directors to incorporate team-building activities into their departments to prevent burnout. At department meetings, staff members can take turns picking a team-building exercise in which all members can participate. There are several team-building books available that give examples of activities.

Recognition is a big part of team building. Recognizing staff members with gestures such as employee of the month or awards for going out of their way for helping someone are another way to build a great team. Allowing staff members to nominate one another for awards helps the members feel that their work is recognized and appreciated, not only their managers but also by their peers. If you have a large department, you may want to develop a departmental intranet page or e-newsletter and put exceptional staff members in the spotlight.

This week’s tip is an excerpt from The Essential Guide to Medical Staff Reappointment: Tools to Create and Maintain an Ongoing, Criteria-base Process by Anne Roberts, CPMSM, CPCS.
