Reevaluate travel time in the hospital

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, July 1, 2008

The SSM St. Mary’s Health Center in Richmond Heights, St. Louis, like other hospitals, is experimenting with a new plan to reduce hospital “travel time,” according to an article “Pilot program seeks to keep doctors” in last week’s The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. A hospitalist sometimes ineffectively uses time because he or she must answer pages that come from one end of the hospital to the other. Since it may not be possible to reconstruct the building’s floor plan, the program assigns hospitalists to specific areas to reduce unnecessary back-and-forth time. According to hospital staff, the new plan is saving time on morning rounds. Click here to read the article and see if hospitalist-assigned areas may work for your program.
