Electronic prescribing vs. pen and pad

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 24, 2008

Despite the benefits of electronic prescribing, the majority of doctors continue to prescribe drugs by writing on a traditional prescription pad, according to Jacob Goldstein of The Wall Street Journal Health Blog in Monday’s post “Why E-Prescibing Hasn’t Caught On.” E-prescribing can help reduce the associated pitfalls of paper prescriptions including messy handwriting and medication mix-up. The electronic method can track the full list of the patient’s drugs.

Some congressional representatives advocate for financial incentives to reward doctors who e-prescribe and punish those who still use the traditional handwritten method. Consider the pros and cons of implementing electronic prescribing in your hospitalist program.
