How to cut down on ED delays

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 16, 2008

A health blog post on The Wall Street Journal by Sarah Rubenstein outlines a plan to reduce emergency department delays. Consider the following tips to reduce patient wait time in the ED by effectively using available staff and space:

  • Consolidate triage by condensing the number of questions nurses ask patients and assigning patients faster
  • Have the patient see the doctor and nurse at the same time
  • Utilize and stock “universal rooms” with medical supplies or keep supplies on hand on nearby carts for patients with various illness or injuries
  • Begin registration paperwork after care has started
  • Discharge patients from the ED quickly
