Overnight shifts gain popularity

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 3, 2008

A Wall Street Journal Health blog article states that hospitals are increasingly hiring hospitalists or “nocturnists” to work during dedicated night shifts, the time when patient complications and medical errors seem to increase. In 2007, 1,200 hospitals employed a nocturnist or hospitalist during evening shifts, up from only 700 hospitals in 2003, according to the Society of Hospital Medicine.
