Employ a hospitalist orientation program
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, June 3, 2008
To prevent hospitalist turnover, consider developing an orientation program. An orientation program provides hospitalists with the tools and support to help them adjust to their new work setting. When designing an orientation program, keep the following tips in mind.
- Explain your practice model and key operating principles
- Cover the structure and relationships at your hospital.
- Present standards for documentation
- Explain the processes for reporting and signing out
- Explain communication standards
- Explain processes for follow-up care and handoffs
- Set up a discussion of the mission statement, objective, and values of the hospitalist service
- Develop mentoring program between new hires and existing staff for regular check-ins during the first six months
The above is an excerpt from Tools and Strategies for an Effective Hospitalist Program by Jeffrey R. Dichter, MD, FACP and Kenneth G. Simone, DO, published by HCPro Inc.
