Consumers rate hospitals online on CMS
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 27, 2008
The government last week launched a nationwide advertising campaign to promote its Hospital Compare Web site, an auditing tool that rates 2,500 hospitals in the country. The Web site for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services, uses a 26-point measurement system with 10 questions relating to patient satisfaction as a marker of quality care. Hospital Compare joins other hospital comparison tools like the Joint Commission’s Quality Check, HealthGrades, and the Leapfrog Group for Patient Safety Web sites. The Hospital Compare campaign, which cost $1.9 million for full-page ads in 58 newspapers in 49 states, is part of a national campaign for hospital transparency and consumer-driven healthcare. Hospital Compare may help curious hospitalists measure how well their organization is rated against other hospitals in the same area.
