Six tips to ensure accurate coding
Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 27, 2008
Hospitalists know the pain of inconsistent coding all too well. It is crucial to comply with current standards for efficient billing, or else hospitals may face financial penalties from insurers and/or the government. Hospitalists and administrators can take the following steps to improve coding accuracy:
- Attend educational sessions on coding and billing
- Schedule routine peer and internal audits
- Engage an outside independent source to review coding and billing practices every three to five years
- Plan to take corrective action, educate, and refund payers if necessary
- Familiarize yourself with methods on how to communicate in notes, dictation, and electronic medical records
- Avoid “cloned” documentation, or information that is automatically brought forward from a previous note or encounter
The above is an excerpt from The Hospitalist Program Management Guide, Second Edition, written by Kenneth G. Simone, DO and Jeffrey R. Dichter, MD, FACP.
