Moonlighting: Nighttime hospitalist shifts

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, May 6, 2008

An article in the April issue of Today’s Hospitalist, “Is moonlighting right for you?” explores the benefits and pitfalls of taking evening shifts. There is a delicate balance between the extra bucks and the risk of burnout. Here are a few points to consider before you recruit hospitalists for the evening shift or start to moonlight yourself:

  • Contracts. Some full-time physicians are prohibited from taking on extra night shifts.
  • Insurance and credentials. Make sure moonlighting programs also give benefits.
  • Scheduling. Try to set your schedule a year in advance to accomdate multiple work schedules.
  • Familiarity. Hospitalists should stay up to date with other areas in the hospital, especially for moonlighters who shift groups from day to evening.
