With the gray clouds of a physician shortage looming on the horizon, hospitals should begin developing recruitment strategies now. If they wait until the storm hits, they are bound to get wet.

Gabriela Cora, MD, MBA, president of Miami-based Executive Health & Wealth Institute, Inc., an executive consulting firm, says understaffed hospitals may experience the following issues due to the impending physician shortage:

Lower quality of care as a result of having a smaller pool of physician applicants

  • Higher physician salaries in response to supply and demand
  • Turf wars as a result of physicians’ responsibilities crossing over into other specialties to meet patient needs
  • Low morale as a result of physicians feeling overworked
