With the help of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 (PSQIA), healthcare organizations will soon be able to voluntarily report their patient safety data without fear of those data being used against them in court. In February, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published its proposed regulations regarding patient safety organizations (PSO)—entities created under PSQIA to collect and analyze patient safety data (see “Guide to understanding PSQIA” below).
