Hospitalists learn to treat addicted patients

Hospitalist Leadership Connection, April 8, 2008

An article in the March issue of Today’s Hospitalist looks at how several hospitalists are dealing with prescription drug-dependent patients. According to the article, hospitalists should be aware that patients are not only abusing narcotics and benzodiazepines, but an increasing number are dependent on headache medications and muscle relaxants. Signs of dependence on prescription medications may include patients asking for prescription medications by name, being dishonest about the dosage prescribed by their primary doctors, and purchasing prescriptions at more than one pharmacy.
